Two young officers from the United Nations Space Forces, Susumu Kodai and Daisuke Shima, retrieve a mysterious capsule from a spaceship that has crash-landed on Mars and return to Earth.
What awaited Kodai and Shima when they returned to Earth was the "Yamato Project," which was being carried out to hold the final hope of humanity.
It was a project to build a space battleship capable of interstellar travel for the first time in human history, using technology provided by Iscandar, an unknown planet located at the far end of the Large Magellanic Cloud.
